Post 15: NICARAGUA

One of my co-workers, Kate, asked me to go to Nicaragua with her for the weekend. She had to go to re-new her visa (it expires every 3 months) so I thought it would be cool to visit a near-by country while in another country! We paid a little extra on the way to take a bus that would take us through the border. Luckily, Kate had been to Nicaragua before so she knew how to cross the border and where to go. The Costa Rican/Nicaraguan border is very poorly marked and could easily be confused as a hidden random truck stop.

We went to Granada, Nicaragua which was actually named after one of my favorite cities in Spain (Granada!). It is full of historical, colorful buildings and sits along Lake Granada. We stayed at a hostel named the “The Bearded Monkey,” where Kate had stayed on one of her other visits. It was a very beautiful city to see, but definitely had a “quiet presence” about it. We shopped during the day and hung out in our hostel at night, mostly because the electricity frequently goes out in Nicaragua. We didn’t want to be in an unfamiliar place in the pitch dark!

This was the adorable pet cat at our hostel.
